Meg's Habit
1989-2012, Crafty Prospector - Attractive Lady by Great Sun

She died on Tuesday, March 27, 2012.  We were with her at the end.  She was the foundation of our involvement in breeding and racing.  She was 23 years old and retired from breeding in 2008.  She gave us 11 babies, nine went on to win races and they earned over $1,500,000.  She was an exceptionally successful broodmare. We received a call that she was down in the field and then another call that she had to be put down.  We were on the way our Ocala from Boca Raton by then.  She had lost all feeling in the rear and was sitting with her rear legs helpless and splayed forward underneath her but she remained up on her front legs.  She was so sure that she was going to get up that she never really would lie down.  She was not in pain, just frustrated and confused but still brave and determined.  She was truly special and loved by us and many others.  A few minutes after this picture was taken it was over.

And in 1992...

No Bad Habits
1994 Colt, Roanoke - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

He was the first foal out of Meg's Habit.  He was sold for $20,000 as a two year old and earned $469,000 in purse money in his 8 year racing career.  He started 75 times and won 10 races, was in the money 43 times and stakes placed once. He raced in NY until 2004 when he moved to lesser tracks.  We saw that he was entered in a $4,000 claiming race at River Downs in Ohio it was an indication that his career was coming to a close.  Rather than leave him to the fate that faces many retired race horses we decided to claim him and retire him.  Ironically he won that last race but we brought him back to Florida where he enjoys a comfortable retirement with loving care at the Niall Brennan farm.

Blazing Saddle
1995, Go and Go Colt - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

Blazing raced 43 times and won 3 races, one at each of the New York tracks.  He had a second career as a show horse and is now enjoying a quiet retirement with a family in Ocala, Florida.

Mr Smartypants
1996 Colt, Go and Go - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

Another colt by Go and Go.  Conventional wisdom in breeding says don't breed to the same stallion a second time until you know if the mating worked for the first one.  But this was early days and such knowledge hadn't reached us yet.  But we got another winner.  And interestingly Blazing was a bay color, raced on grass and was best at a distance.  Mr SP was a chestnut color and raced on the dirt as a sprinter.  He raced 27 times, won 2 races and earned over $87,000.

Smiling Bob
1997 Colt,  Anjiz - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

Bob was named after Bob Parker, dear friend and husband of partner Pat Parker, who had passed away when the horse was an unnamed yearling.  He raced 28 times and earned over $87,000.  He only won one race.  It was a flying finish at Saratoga on Pat Parker's birthday.  Smiling Bob has enjoyed multiple careers since retiring from racing.  He has been a show horse, pleasure horse and now works as a guide pony at the Niall Brennan Training Center in Ocala, Florida.

Note:  The first three horses we raced all won a race at the prestigious Saratoga meet.  All were out of our one mare, Meg's Habit.  We subsequently learned of breeders with several mares waitng years for their first win a Saratoga.

Sea Cloud
1999 Colt, Housebuster - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

He raced 28 times, won twice and earned over $101,000.  Now a show horse for a family in Jacksonville, Florida.

Schemer
2001-2012 Filly, Concern - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector.

She died suddenly after foaling on Tuesday, March 20, 2012.   We received a call that she had dropped a lovely large colt and we were thrilled.  20 minutes later she collapsed from internal bleeding due to a ruptured artery in her uterus.  Even with a veterinarian on the scene there was nothing that could be done and she died shortly thereafter. At 131 pounds and 10.2 hands the foal was huge.  Because of Schemer's somewhat small size care was taken to select a stallion that might produce a smaller foal.  Mother Nature thought otherwise. She was with us for 11 years.  She was a lovely petite filly who raced with a big heart.  She won five races and earned over $230,000.00.  She delivered five foals including the most recent one.  We loved her very much.

Biscotti
2002 Filly, Regal Classic - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

She didn't have much of racing career and was made a broodmare.  Her offspring Bon Bon went on to win races.

Baxter
2004 Colt, American Chance - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

Our only stakes winner.  in 2006 as a two-year-old he won the NY Stallion Stakes-Fifth Avenue Division with Kent Desormeaux aboard.

Muffy
2005 Filly, Tomorrow's Cat - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

She almost died from a series of illnesses but came back to win two races.  Now a broodmare.

Wiseacre
2006, Wiseman's Ferry - Meg's Habit by Crafty Prospector

He retired from racing in 2009.  He has all the attributes of a potential winner but never showed the "heart" needed to be competitive and finish up a race.  He has been donated the University of Kentucky girls polo team which may be more his style.

Bon Bon
2006 Filly, Gimmeawink - Biscotti by Regal Classic

Sold for $20,000 in 2008.  Raced until age 7 when we claimed her back and donated her to the Final Furlong charity.  She was placed with a new owner for a new life in April 2014.

Bounder
2007-2010 Colt, Orientate - Schemer by Concern - Meg's Habit

He never lived up to expectations on the track and was retired at age three.  He was given to a family to be trained as a show horse.  He died unexpectedly at his new home in Alabama at age four.  The probable cause was colic - always a life threatening issue with horses due to their unique digestive system.  He was rushed to the Auburn University Vet Center but did not survive.  He was progressing nicely in his new career as a show horse and had made his debut in a minor show the prior weekend.  He had been placed by The Final Furlong charity (Jack is a founding director) in a home with loving care.  The new owner was distraught as she had already become quite attached to him.

Scribbler
2008 Filly, Read the Footnotes - Schemer by Concern -Meg's Habit

Good Habits
2008 Filly, Freud - Meg's Habit

She retired from racing in early 2012.  Her "tie-back" surgery in 2011 was successful but the resulting open flap in her throat left her subject to infections.  Her immune system wasn't up to handling it.  It took six months to recover from the surgery and train again to be racing fit but in competition it was too much for her.   She was the fastest horse we ever bred and had a bright future at the track.  She is now at Rockridege, a New York farm in Hudson, NY..

Sweet Ginger
2009 Filly, Greeley's Galaxy - Schemer

She ran her last race at Belmont Park in October 2010.   After four attempts at different distances, different surfaces and different jockeys she showed no appetite for racing.  She is an attractive filly with a kind disposition.  She has been donated to the Final Furlong charity for placement in a new career with caring owners.  Jack is a founding director of the charity which has now placed over 50 retired race horses in new homes or careers as show horses, trail horses, polo ponies and family pets. She was moved to her new owner in November 2010.
